ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Geography – A Legacy of Excellence Since 1995

Established in the year 1995, the Department of Geography at Panskura Banamali College (Autonomous) has steadily evolved into a center of geographic learning, research, and community engagement. From its beginnings as an undergraduate teaching unit affiliated with Vidyasagar University, the department has grown into a multidimensional academic point, distinguished by its commitment to quality teaching, impactful research, and meaningful community engagement. Guided by a clear vision — to emerge in geographic education — the department has consistently strived to thinking, spatial awareness, and environmental stewardship among its students. These guiding principles continue to shape curriculum design, faculty development, and student mentorship initiatives.

A landmark achievement in the department’s institutional journey came in 2013, when it became the first department outside the main campus of Vidyasagar University to launch a Postgraduate (M.Sc.) program in Geography. Building upon this momentum, the department took another pioneering leap in 2017 by introducing its Ph.D. program in Geography, offered under the auspices of the college’s Science Research Centre — once again becoming the first such department beyond the university’s main campus to offer doctoral studies in the discipline.

These academic advancements were made possible by sustained investments in infrastructure and human capital. The department laboratories equipped with modern geospatial technologies, including GIS (Geographic Information Systems), Remote Sensing software, GPS units, and cartographic tools. These facilities enable undergraduate and postgraduate students — as well as doctoral researchers — to engage in hands-on, technology-driven geographic analysis, aligning classroom learning with real-world applications.

Faculty members are engaged in diverse research domains like Physical Geography, Social and Human Geography, Planning & Development and Spatial Analysis. The Ph.D. program, in particular, has attracted scholars pursuing original, field-based, and policy-relevant work that contribute meaningfully to geographic knowledge and regional development. The department also places strong emphasis on socially relevant outreach through field surveys, community projects, and environmental awareness campaigns.
